Major League Baseball games Saturday's Roundup
Red Sox 13, Yankees 9
Mike Napoli hit two homeruns while Jonny Gomes homered and drove in four runs, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 13-9 win over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Napoli recorded his 13th career, and third of the season, double home run game.
He hit a two-run shot in the second inning and a solo shot in the ninth. Napoli has 18 RBI against New York this season, with eight coming in this series.
In between Napoli's home runs, Gomes hit a three-run shot in Boston's five-run fourth and rookie Xander Bogaerts added a two-run blast in the fifth for the Red Sox, who have won five straight and eight of the last nine.
Boston has scored 34 runs in this series and 56 over their last five games while hitting 17 home runs.
Reds 4, Dodgers 3 (10 innings)
Todd Frazier's RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning drove home rookie Billy Hamilton for the winning run, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Cincinnati (81-62) moved to within one and a half games of the first-place St Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.
The magic number for the Dodgers (83-58) to clinch the National League West Division remained 11.
Orioles 4, White Sox 3 (10 innings)
Matt Wieters singled home two runs with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Wieters singled to right field, scoring pinch runner Chris Dickerson with the tying run and Markakis with the winner.
Pinch hitter Conor Gillaspie had hit a solo homer with one out in the 10th inning to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead.
Brian Roberts homered and Danny Valencia had three hits for Baltimore (76-65), who along with Cleveland moved one game behind Tampa Bay for the final AL wild card spot.
A's 2, Astros 1
Rookie right-hander Dan Straily pitched seven shutout innings and Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie hit home runs, lifting the Oakland A's to a 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros.
After dropping the opener in this four-game series against the last-place Astros, the A's have won two straight as they continue to vie for top honours in their tight race with Texas for the American League West title.
For much of the game, Straily (9-7) was locked in a duel with Astros rookie left-hander Brett Oberholtzer (4-2).
Brewers 5, Cubs 3
Rookie Logan Schafer's three-run triple in the Brewers' four-run fourth inning turned out to be the offensive highlight of the game, ultimately providing the game-deciding runs as Milwaukee beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 at Wrigley Field.
The Brewers and Cubs both came into the day with identical 60-80 records, far out of the playoff picture in the National League with almost a month still left to play.
Indians 9, Mets 4
Nick Swisher and Asdrubal Cabrera belted home runs, and right-hander Corey Kluber won his first start after a one-month stay on the disabled list as the Indians beat the New York Mets 9-4 for Cleveland's fourth win in a row.
Swisher's solo homer, his second home run in as many days, gave Cleveland a 6-1 second-inning lead.
After the Mets cut the lead to 6-4, Cabrera blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
Cardinals 5, Pirates 0
Adam Wainwright passed a team legend in the record books and pushed the Cardinals back into first place in the wild National League Central race as St Louis beat Pittsburgh 5-0 at sold-out Busch Stadium.
Bouncing back from two straight rough starts against Cincinnati, Wainwright (16-9) allowed two hits in seven shutout innings and retired the last 11 men he faced, striking out the last four.
He walked two and fanned eight as he tied Washington's Jordan Zimmerman and Colorado's Jorge De La Rosa for the league lead in wins.
Wainwright's first strikeout enabled him to pass Dizzy Dean for second in franchise history with 1,096.
David Freese knocked in two runs for the Cardinals (82-60), including a solo homer in the sixth as St Louis regained a half-game lead over the Pirates (81-60).
It was the third straight loss for the Pirates, who still need one victory to clinch their first winning season since 1992, the last time they made the playoffs.
Nationals 9, Marlins 2
Rookie Tanner Roark pitched six scoreless innings in his first big league start and the Washington Nationals routed the last-place Miami Marlins, 9-2.
Roark (5-0), a highly effective reliever since being called up Aug. 7, lowered his ERA to 0.94 after allowing four hits, all of them singles, and no runs.
Royals 4, Tigers 3
Salvador Perez hit a two-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3.
The Royals rebounded from an embarrassing 16-2 loss on Friday when they allowed 26 hits.
After Eric Hosmer doubled to lead off the sixth, Perez connected against Justin Verlander for his 11th home run of the season.
Verlander, who is 0-3 in five starts against the Royals this season, allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings.
Phillies 6, Braves 5
Freddy Galvis hit a walk-off solo home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning as Philadelphia defeated Atlanta 6-5, giving the Phillies two straight victories.
Carlos Ruiz had three RBI to pace the Phillies' offense, which held a 15-7 edge in hits.
The NL-East leading Braves are only 34-36 on the road but built their double-digit divisional lead via an MLB-best 51-20 home record.
Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick recorded eight strikeouts (in six innings) to tie his career high.
Blue Jays 11, Twins 2
The Minnesota Twins spotted the visiting Toronto Blue Jays a big early lead and the Jays made them pay with an 11-2 shellacking.
In a game that started remarkably similar to the previous night's game, the Blue Jays scored five runs in the first inning and then their bats quieted down for the next five innings.
In the seventh, the Jays got going again, scoring two runs against Twins reliever Josh Roenicke.
Padres 2, Rockies 1
Jedd Gyorko delivered the winning home run in the eighth inning as the San Diego Padres edged the Colorado Rockies 2-1.
Gyorko hit the first pitch off reliever Matt Belisle into the bleachers in right to lead off the eighth after the Rockies tied the score in the top of the inning.
Gyorko, who went 2-for-4, has 17 homers in his first season with the Padres.
San Diego (63-77) won for the fourth time in the past five games while the Rockies (66-77) have lost four of their last five.
Diamondbacks 2, Giants 1
Brandon McCarthy posted his first career road win in California, limiting the San Francisco Giants to six hits in eight innings in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2-1 victory at AT&T Park.
The eight-year veteran gave up a third-inning run but then shut down the Giants until handing over the ball to Brad Ziegler, who notched his ninth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
The win, Arizona's second in three games in San Francisco this week, allowed the Diamondbacks to remain 8 1/2 games behind Cincinnati in the National League wild-card race.
Mariners 6, Rays 2
Kendrys Morales drove in a pair of runs to give the Seattle Mariners an early lead on Tampa Bay, helping to send the struggling Rays to a 6-2 loss on a night when Seattle starter James Paxton sparkled in his Major League debut.
The ice-cold Rays (77-64) have now lost 11 of their last 14 games while falling from a first-place tie in the AL East to a slim lead in the wild-card race.
Baltimore and Cleveland each moved within a game of Tampa Bay in the race for the AL's second wild-card spot, while the Yankees (2 1/2 games back) and Kansas City (3 1/2) are also in contention.
Morales had an RBI single in the first inning and added a solo homer in the third.
Paxton (1-0) scattered four hits, and one of the two runs he allowed was unearned because of an error that allowed Tampa's Ben Zobrist to reach first base before an Evan Longoria homer.
Angels 8, Rangers 3
Mark Trumbo homered, Grant Green drove in three runs and Garrett Richards pitched seven strong innings to lead the Angels to an 8-3 victory over the Texas Rangers at Angel Stadium.
The Rangers did not make things easy on themselves, particularly starting pitcher Derek Holland, with three errors in the first two innings leading to four unearned runs.
One night after snapping a 14-game streak without a home run, Trumbo homered again, hitting a two-run blast in the first inning, his 31st homer of the season.
Green had a sacrifice fly in the second inning and a two-run double in the sixth as the Angels won for the 12th time in their last 15 games.
For the Rangers, the loss was their third in a row and the fifth in six games and they now trail the Oakland A's by 1 1/2 games but still lead the wild-card race by three games.

Georgia loses WR Mitchell to knee injury
ATLANTA (AP) -- Malcolm Mitchell, receiver of Georgia Bulldogs will not be able to play the remainder of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Saturday's loss at Clemson.
Mitchell, the leading returning receiver for the No. 5 Bulldogs, hurt his knee when celebrating with a teammate following Todd Gurley's 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. No. 8 Clemson beat Georgia 38-35.
"He actually hurt it in the exuberance of the first touchdown of the game for us," Richt said on a conference call.
"He went to congratulate his teammate and I think they jumped up and chest-bumped or whatever and it ended up that he landed in a bad way. So he knew something happened."
Georgia opens its Southeastern Conference schedule against No. 6 South Carolina on Saturday.
Mitchell, a junior, was Georgia's leading returning receiver. He had a combined 85 catches for 1,237 yards and eight touchdowns in 2011 and 2012.
He played primarily at cornerback in the first four games last season before returning to offense.
Richt said he expects Mitchell will receive a medical redshirt and have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2014 season.
Cardinals beat Pirates 7-2, now tied at NL Central lead
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Right-hander Joe Kelly allowed four hits over six solid innings to win his fourth straight start and the Cardinals moved back into a tie for first place in the NL Central with a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Kelly (7-3) walked two and struck out five while remaining unbeaten since being moved to the starting rotation full-time in July.
Kelly received plenty of help from an offense that snapped out of a three-game funk by tagging Pittsburgh spot starter Kris Johnson (0-2).
Matt Holliday and David Freese drove in two runs apiece while Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig, Yadier Molina and Shane Robinson added two hits each for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Titans win against Falcons 27-16
Jake Locker threw for 133 yards and goes for a touchdown, and Tennessee sacked Matt Ryan five times Saturday night as the Titans beat the Falcons 27-16.
Locker got both his first TD with a 11-yarder to Nate Washington and the first turnover this preseason for the Titans. The third-year quarterback also posted his best game yet as he completed 11 of 13 passes and finished with a 134.9 passer rating before leaving after a series in the third quarter.
The Falcons, who lost to San Francisco in the NFC championship game in January, averaged 26.2 points per season in 2012. But they trailed 20-6 when Ryan left after one series in the third period, settling for field goals despite driving to the Tennessee 6 and 13 early.
The Falcons didn't get that close again with the first-team offense. Coach Mike Smith said his Falcons didn't play up to their standards, but he trusts his players to be ready for the season opener Sept. 8 at New Orleans.

Royals INF Tejada suspended 105 games for PEDs
KANSAS CITY, Mo.- PEDs have taken another toll in baseball as Miguel Tejada was suspended Saturday for 105 games after testing positive for an amphetamine he is the third former MVP caught using PEDs.
The Kansas City Royals infielder drew one of the longest penalties handed down by Major League Baseball. His ban came after Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez was suspended for 211 games and Brewers star Ryan Braun got a 65-game penalty that will keep him off the field for the rest of the season.
All three stars have been dogged by doping allegations in the past.
Associated Press reported that Tejada tested positive for Adderall, a substance the 39-year-old has used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because those details were not made public.
MLB's medical staff grants therapeutic-use exemptions that allow players to use drugs such as Adderall to treat ADD. But the substance has become a popular performance-enhancer, accounting for 10 of the 11 positive stimulant tests in the major league program in the year ending with the 2012 World Series, according to the annual report of the Independent Program Administrator.
The report, which was released in November, said that medication for ADD accounted for 116 of 119 therapeutic-use exemptions granted by Major League Baseball.
Tejada, who was already on the 60-day disabled list with a calf injury, previously tested positive under the league's amphetamine policy. That subjected him to a 25-game ban for a second test and an 80-game suspension for a third. He is not challenging the penalties.

LA Dodgers sweeps Tampa Bay Rays
The Los Angeles Dodgers increased their NL West lead to a season-best 7 1/2 games Sunday night with an 8-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Mark Ellis had a homer and three RBIs to help the Dodgers improve to a major league-best 37-8 since June 22, a stretch that has dramatically turned around their season after they trailed the Arizona Diamondbacks by as many as 9 1/2 games. The Dodgers are a season-best 17 games over .500.
Kershaw (11-7) allowed two runs - one earned - and struck out eight to help the Dodgers complete their seventh series sweep of the season. Tampa Bay's only hits off the 2011 Cy Young Award winning left-hander through the first seven innings came in the fifth, a leadoff single by Yunel Escobar and a two-out triple by pinch-hitter Sam Fuld.
