Albert Pujols On Disabled list

Albert Pujols,baseball,MBL

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols was placed on the disabled list Sunday because of a tear in his left foot that could end his season.

Manager Mike Scioscia told reporters that Pujols will be sidelined for "a significant amount of time."
He has a partially torn plantar fascia, an injury that has bothered him most of the season. He aggravated it while running out a single in the ninth inning of Friday's 6-4 loss to Oakland.

"This is something that, talking to Albert, has been going on for six or seven years," Scioscia said before the Angels' game against Athletics. "It's been going on for a long time and he's managed it. This is a big blow to our team right now."

Although surgery seems unlikely, Scioscia didn't rule out the possibility that Pujols could be sidelined for the rest of the year.

Pujols left the team and returned to Los Angeles on Saturday morning for additional testing. That's when the injury was diagnosed.

The three-time NL MVP, who signed a $240 million, 10-year contract with the Angels as a free agent in December 2011, has served as the club's designated hitter most of the season. Pujols was hitting .258 with 17 home runs and 64 RBIs before re-injuring his foot.

The Angels went into the season with hopes of winning the AL West. They began the day with a 48-54 record, 12 games behind the first-place A's.

Outfielder Kole Calhoun was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake.

US Soccer team victorious against Panama

CHICAGO USA - A surprising victory indeed. In just 42 seconds after coming into the game as a substitute Sunday, Shea looked sharp and scored his goal in the 69th minute that gave the United States a 1-0 victory over Panama and the CONCACAF Gold Cup title.

This is the fifth Gold Cup title of the U.S.A., their first was 2007.

"I was there just to put it away," Shea said.

When they heard the final whistle, team USA began celebrating while the rest of the team raced off the bench. Several players jumped up and down, and hugs and high-fives were exchanged. Klinsmann, who watched the game from a luxury box after being suspended for his tirade over the officiating in the semifinal, quickly made his way down to the field, pumping his fists in the air as he walked.

"They wanted to send out a signal that they are the best group in CONCACAF, and they are," Klinsmann said. "For today."

Napoli's 2 Home Runs Helped Red Sox beat Yankees 8-7 in 11

BOSTON (AP) - Mike Napoli hit a three-run shot after the Red Sox fell behind early, then he ended the game with a solo shot with two outs in the 11th inning as the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 8-7 Sunday evening.

"He's a dangerous batter," Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. "He can do damage at any point in the game."

The Red Sox scored seven runs after falling behind 3-0, thanks to Napoli's three-run homer in the third inning that cleared the seats above the Green Monster and the billboard above them. But they coughed up the lead when New York scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie it 7-all.

Top Track and Field Sprinters Tested Positive for banned substances

Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Sherone Simpson, banned substances, steroids

Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Sherone Simpson, banned substances, steroids

Sprinters Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson admitted Sunday that they had tested positive for banned substances.

Tyson Gay is an American champion in 100 meters while Jamaica's Powell is the former world-record holder in the 100 meters. Sherone Simpson of Jamaica has won a gold and two silver Olympic medals.

Gay, who is the winner of world championship in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay in 2007, took part in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's "My Victory" program - in which athletes volunteer for enhanced testing to prove they're clean - and his results never raised red flags. Until, that is, an out-of-competition test May 16 that yielded positive results for a banned substance, the identity of which neither he nor USADA CEO Travis Tygart would reveal.

Powell 30,  holder of 100-meter record of 9.74 stood until Usain Bolt beat it in 2008, wants an investigation as to how a stimulant called oxilofrine entered his system and caused a positive test at Jamaica's national championships in June.

Simpson, who tested positive for the same stimulant, said she "would not intentionally take an illegal substance of any form into my system."

The positives recorded by Powell and Simpson are part of a bigger doping crisis hitting Jamaica. In Sunday's editions, The Gleaner newspaper of Jamaica reported that five athletes had tested positive. Paul Doyle, the agent who represents Powell and Simpson, confirmed to the AP that his sprinters were among them.

Why not just legalized steroids use in sports? I'm pretty sure it is used even in NBA and other sports they are just not getting caught. Legalized it for a level playing field.

BASEBALL - Weekend Sports In Brief

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Tim Lincecum tossed aside his recent struggles and pitched his first career no-hitter and the second in the majors in 11 days, a gem saved by a spectacular diving catch by right fielder Hunter Pence in the San Francisco Giants' 9-0 win over last-place San Diego on Saturday night.

Lincecum has won two Cy Young Awards and two World Series rings. Now he has something really remarkable - a no-hitter in which he threw a whopping career-high 148 pitches.

NEW YORK (AP) - Pittsburgh pitcher Mark Melancon has been picked as a replacement for the NL All-Star team, giving the Pirates five players in the game for the first time since 1972.

NL manager Bruce Bochy also selected Sergio Romo, his San Francisco Giants closer, as a replacement pick Sunday. Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke and Washington Nationals pitcher Jordan ZImmermann, both on the original NL All-Star roster, are hurt and will miss Tuesday's game at Citi Field.

Baltimore pitcher Chris Tillman was picked by AL manager Jim Leyland of Detroit to replace Tigers ace Justin Verlander, who started Sunday. Under baseball's labor contract, pitchers who start on the Sunday before the All-Star game may opt not to participate. Verlander was the AL starter and loser of last year's All-Star game at Kansas City.

Yasiel Puig, the Los Angeles Dodgers rookie sensation, was left out again after the substitutes were added to the National League roster Sunday. But this time, fans were not responsible. Instead, it sounds as though Puig's ailing hip settled the issue.

NEW YORK (AP) - Matt Davidson of the Arizona Diamondbacks hit a two-run homer and the United States beat the World Team 4-2 on Sunday in the All-Star Futures Game, baseball's annual showcase for top minor league prospects.

The opening event for three days of All-Star festivities at Citi Field, the Futures Game certainly had a New York Mets flavor to it in the team's home ballpark. Two of the club's touted pitching prospects, Rafael Montero and Noah Syndergaard, started on the mound and each worked a scoreless inning.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians said Greg Van Niel, a season-ticket holder, hauled in four souvenir balls during the Indians' 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Van Niel said he wasn't sitting in his usual seats, but was able to catch three balls and that one was a ''pick-up'' he tossed to another fan. Van Niel said he planned to give the three other balls to kids that were part of his group.

Aaron Hernandez jerseys,eBay

Because of his recent troubles the NFL has stopped selling Aaron Hernandez jerseys, and the Patriots offers a replacement jersey for those who want to exchange it.

However, on eBay fans who listed Hernandez jerseys since he was charged with first-degree murder have been able to profit from it.

John Lamothe, a Patriots fan told he Boston Globe he was shocked to get $289 for a Hernandez jersey he put on eBay last week.

“I thought about giving it to Goodwill, but I didn’t think anybody would want it,” Lamothe said. “I thought I might get $15 for it.”

Lynn L’Heureux, who paid $100 for a Hernandez jersey, has seen the bidding reach $127 so far.

“I can’t think of any reason why people would want it,” L’Heureux said. “They might think it will go up in value later on, and maybe it will, but I’m not interested. I just don’t want it in my possession. I want to use the money to buy a jersey that reflects my pride in the Patriots.”
